Judo can be used for sport and self-defence and is a brilliant Martial Art for all ages. Our classes are currently for anyone age 8 years and up, but we are looking to add a class for younger students if there is a demand.

What is Judo?

Judo is a Martial art that was created in Tokyo, Japan, during the late 19th century by Professor Jigoro Kano. His new art was a distillation of Jujutsu techniques that could be practised at full force, safely. This art was created to be used by all, no matter of size, strength or gender. To be a form of self-defence using the two main principles:

  • “Seiryoku Zenyo” – Maximum efficiency achieved with minimum effort
  • “Jita Kyoei” – Mutual welfare and benefit

When an understanding of the physical principles of Judo has been reached, a sufficient amount of force applied in the correct fashion can throw any opponent, no matter how large or strong. With practice, Judo represents a problem-solving system with principles that may be applied to many facets of life.

Our Judo Syllabus Consists of

  • Tai So – Physical fitness training
  • Waza – Techniques
  • Randori – Free practice or Sparring
  • Shiai – Competition
  • Kata – A predetermined series of movements often used for demonstration purposes
  • Goshin Jutsu – Self Defence methods
